Encouraging Reading through Design

The Zhongshu Bookstore in Suzhou, China, designed by Yu Ting of Wutopia Lab, is divided into a series of zones to stimulate the mind. Each with a fresh approach to design and an individual character, the zones inspire and engage thanks to creative design and wonderful imagination. This is no ordinary bookstore as The Sanctuary of Crystal, The Cave of Fireflies, The Xanadu of Rainbows and The Castle of Innocence for children books.

The Sanctuary of Crystal dedicated to books. With the latest arrivals arranged on pre fabricated transparent acrylic shelves, the focus is clearly on the page. Glass bricks, mirrors and acrylic form a shining white space, luring customers into the heart of the store.

After the whiteness, The Cave of Fireflies is a darker tunnel connecting the main hall and the entrance. Customers can choose books and follow fiber optic cables into the main reading area.

The Xanadu of Rainbows is a large, open space. Thanks to the large windows, natural light pours inside. Taking advantage of different heights of shelves, steps, and tables, the space forms an abstracted landscape of cliffs, valleys, islands, rapids, and oases where thin perforated aluminum sheets in gradated colors simulate rainbows.
